An
example of a Dentzel in bad shape - this animal was left out in the elements
in Alaska for several years. The damage was very extensive and the restoration
quite time consuming. This is the animal as it was found.
Pieces
were missing, all the glue joints delaminated, and dry rot, screw, and
nail damage all had to be remedied.
Most
carousel animals are glued with a hide glue and dowels - no metal fasteners
were used - so all the screws and nails had to be removed and the joints
reglued and doweled. Worn areas were built up with an epoxy, missing pieces
recarved, and the wood carefully sanded and sealed.
The
finished horse is barely recognizeable from the "designer kindling"
that it was.
